July 17 - Bar Harbor

Drizzly day, but very interesting place.  Our new friend, Laura the naturalist on board lives here and recommended we go to the Thirsty Whale for lunch, so we did!  Excellent lobster roll, fish sandwich, chowder & local beer.  Thanks, Laura!

After lunch at low tide, we once again walked on the ocean floor!  There is a Bar in the Harbor (hence the name) which you can walk on at low tide to get to the peninsula, which is an island at high tide.  







After dinner, we found a great little Irish pub with fun live music!




We were back to some pretty serious rocking and rolling overnight as we set sail for Portland, so I happened to be awake at sunrise!  Glad I was.




July 18 - Portland - our last stop.

Lunch and a trolley tour!  Beautiful place.  Purports to be “The city that hasn’t forgotten how to be a small town”.  And Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is from here!  Here’s a good reason to live here - most microbreweries per capita anywhere!  Very interesting mix of old and new architecture as this city has been destroyed and rebuilt four times - by fire three times and once by war.

This has been such a fun trip!  Last minute getaways are the best.  See you on down the road!

Sunday, July 14 - Eastport, Maine This is the easternmost city in the continental  US and one of the most interesting small towns we have ever visited!  Only about 1300 people, but SO much going on.  An incredible network of volunteers makes this little place just hum, and the sense of “family” we felt as we made our way around town showed us how it all works.  There are also whitetail deer walking around everywhere, but they’re just a local nuisance.  First of all is our guide, Tess.  An absolutely remarkable woman who is at the center of everything in Eastport.  Her family has been here - right here in Eastport - since pre-Revoutionary War, and she is a bottomless font of information and history.  She’s a retired elementary school teacher, but she is by no means retired.  In addition to being a tour guide when needed, she is a certified kayak and outdoor adventure guide, ordained minister, on just about ...

We Got Restless - Chapter 3 - And the highlight of this trip!!

Monday, July 15 - St Andrews By-The-Sea, New Brunswick, Canada Once upon a time, we met Anne Jewett & Andrew Cook on a cruise.  We connected with them immediately and have been fast friends and traveling buddies ever since.  We have literally seen the world with these two!  Recently, they moved from their home in Toronto to St Andrews.  We’ve been trying to get up here to see their new home and guess where our ship stopped today!!  This is one of the main reasons for this trip and it was just delightful.  You know those kind of friendships where you might not see or talk to each other for awhile, but when you do, it’s like it was just yesterday?  These are those friends.  We always pick up right where we left off and we can’t imagine our life without them in it.  Luckily, we were here from early morning Sunday till early morning Monday, so we had a good long visit.  We also had wonderful tour guides for our first visit to ...
